The Plastic-Free Swap List: 20 Simple Swaps, Room by Room

The Plastic-Free Swap List: 20 Simple Swaps, Room by Room

You don’t need a perfect zero-waste life to make a real difference at home. You need one good swap, then another. This list is your starting point: 20 simple changes, room by room, that replace something disposable or plastic with something you can use again and again.

Pick one room, try one or two swaps this week, and come back for the next. Every section links to a deeper guide if you want more ideas.

How to use this list

  • Start with what you replace most often. Plastic wrap, cotton rounds and sponges run out fast, so swapping them pays off quickly.
  • Use up what you already have. Finish your plastic toothbrush or sponge first, then switch. Throwing away usable things is not the goal.
  • Go one room at a time. Small, steady changes are the ones that stick.

In the kitchen (swaps 1–6)

  1. Plastic wrap → beeswax wraps. Beeswax Food Wraps cover bowls and wrap sandwiches, cheese, fruit and vegetables, then rinse clean for next time.
  2. Plastic bread bags → a beeswax bread bag. The Beeswax Sourdough Bread Bag is sized for sourdough loaves and baguettes.
  3. Plastic straws → bamboo straws. Reusable carbonized bamboo straws come in wide smoothie or slim styles, with an optional cleaning brush set.
  4. Plastic produce bags → a hanging net bag. A hangable vegetable storage net bag keeps onions and potatoes in the air and off the counter.
  5. Plastic cutting board → bamboo. This bamboo fiber cutting board comes in three sizes and hangs up when you’re done. Not sure which board fits your cooking? Read how to choose a wood cutting board.
  6. Plastic squeeze bottles and spoons → wooden honey dippers. A set of 10 wooden honey dippers for honey, syrup and jam.

In the bathroom (swaps 7–12)

  1. Plastic toothbrush → bamboo toothbrush. The soft bamboo toothbrush has a bamboo handle instead of plastic.
  2. Disposable cotton rounds → washable pads. Reusable makeup remover pads (12 pack) go in the wash and back on your vanity.
  3. Cotton swabs → silicone swabs. Reusable silicone swabs rinse clean with water and a little soap.
  4. Plastic sponges → natural loofah. Natural loofah sponges (4 pack) work in the bath or at the sink.
  5. Plastic comb → bamboo comb. An all-natural bamboo hair comb works for all hair types and doubles as a beard comb.
  6. Shampoo bottles → a shampoo bar. The All-Natural Shampoo Bar skips the plastic bottle entirely.

For your pets (swap 15)

  1. Plastic pet accessories → natural materials. See our natural pet care picks for grooming and play ideas.

Around the home (swaps 16–17)

  1. Plastic storage bins → wicker, rattan and wood. Baskets look warmer on a shelf and hide the clutter just as well. Browse natural home decor in wicker, rattan and wood.
  2. Buy less, buy better. One well-made piece you keep for years beats three you replace. That’s the simplest swap of all.

At the holiday table and under the tree (swaps 18–20)

  1. Paper napkins and plastic placemats → linen and jute. The Natural Holiday Table Set brings six washable linen napkins, four jute placemats and a wooden cabin centerpiece. More ideas in Plastic-Free Holiday Table Hosting.
  2. Plastic gift sets → a swap gift. The Kitchen Swap Trio (beeswax wraps, a coconut shell bowl and wooden honey dippers) and the Stocking Stuffer Swap (konjac sponge, loofahs and a dry body brush) are gifts that keep replacing plastic long after the holidays.
  3. Plastic stocking fillers → small natural gifts. Find more in our eco-friendly gifts under $25, natural wood gifts under $50 and the full holiday gift guide.
